Lewis O'Leary 'eating the afterbirth' C40 bdtd101

Lewis O’Leary: Eating The Afterbirth
Brisbane local Lewis O’Leary has created a very interesting mash-up of pop vocal and guitar melodies, mixed with gritty electronic sounds and improvised instrumentals on his debut solo album “Eating the Afterbirth”. Eating the Afterbirth is suprisingly relaxed, with O’Leary creating textured landscapes that move without warning, and textures that nearly escape from your speakers. As relaxed as it is though, I wouldn’t recommend it for easy listening, as it gives your ears a bit of an experimental work out throughout the transition of the tracks. Track two; In Your Wake, is a definite highlight with some awesome soundscaping coming from O’Leary with fantastic layering of classic pop elements. In a sense this is possibly as close as O’Leary comes to creating a conventional ‘pop song’, but he makes it so inviting to listen to. Million Dollar Cigarette is one of the grittier tracks, with an immense amount of detail. Lewis O’Leary has certainly created something very intrinsic and interesting with “Eating the Afterbirth”, and it’s great to hear something inventive coming out of the local scene.

craft bandits 'love infinity, times a hundred' c40 bdtd076

the first album without bass player matt williams, also the first in a set of two albums the other being LOVE INFINITY X 1000 which has been released by black petal. the following is a reveiw from vital weekly for the other album but equally suits this one...

CRAFT BANDITS - LOVE INFINITY X 1000
Matt Earle is a steady returning artist to the world of Black Petal. Here he part of Craft Bandits, where he plays vocals, guitar, keyboard and synth), along with Melanie Jade Simpson (guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, vocals and Nibblechu). She is also a member of Fantastic Dog & The Cupcake Club. Their music is the result of various jam sessions and show them in a rock-like mood. Last week Jliat asked where the New Zealand artists went, and I'd say: here they are. Craft Bandits sound like any good release on Corpus Hermeticum, with that lo-fi guitar sound, distorted, improvised and a like-wise lo drum sound, which sound recorded in a room next door, but the door was open so luckily some of it came on to the recording. Not that the drums play always an important role in this music, sometimes its just a duet of guitars, spiced with some echo and vocals, making a strange singer-songwriter recorded in a tunnel with a battery operated speaker. Quite nice this stuff. Like Jliat I haven't heard much music like this from the double island down under, but Craft Bandits bring back good memories and I should dig some Corpus up soon. XnobbqX 'people all over the world' c40 bdtd058

legendary performances and incendiary guitar heroics.

xNoBBQx are more brutal. There's something incredibly suggestive in the blankness of their playing, with Matt Earle's guitar at times almost unmediated - it's pure guitar to amp interaction. From monotone sprawls to high velocity noise abuse, xNoBBQx are rock at its most reduced and essential. THE WIRE

amanita band c40 bdtd057

A superb collection of beat, pop, and “off-beat cha-cha” instrumentals and they soar with catchy hooks atop groovy, clever beats. There’s plenty of electric guitar, and crazy percussion rocking and twisting , at times reaching quite a mad and freaky state of affairs.

2779 'toowong village' c40 bdtd055

full-blown electric garage folk-psychedelia! amazing keyboard electronics which play out as forbidden morse code at breakneck speeds…intense and mesmerizing.

"Consisting of xNOBBQx's Matt Earle, his longtime partner in noise Adam Sussmann and Ben Dropsie, 2779 are yet another of the seemingly endless permutations to arise from Australia's Breakdance The Dawn crew. Like a lot of this collective's music, Toowong Village manages to both be rigorous in concept and off the cuff in performance, and its conceptual fortitude(however vague or alien that may be) serves as a welcome backbone.British punk drums, stripped back to the barest kit, plot coordinates for scratchy No Wave guitar thats always about to collapse, and bent circuits that scrawl over everything much like a child smearing crayon accross walls." stasis duo c12 bdtd051

The last time I saw Blue Mountains outfit Stasis Duo they were stoically constructing complex electroacoustic Improv from the innards of two mixing desks on C12 they turn to guitars, though the results are just as confusing as any of their other recordings to date, which have tended toward pure sine tone exploration, or vast slabs of analogue silence. The mix here is puzzling: great, scouring noise, like a malfunctioning amp or intercom, is buried far down amongst tape hiss; the occasional warm woumb of guitar feedback surfaces, only to sink back into obscurity moments later. The kind of mystery you'll never quite (want to) solve.

With its folded A4 paper sleeveand hand scrawled rudimentry artwork, Cities on Flame looks pretty unreposessinng on first glance, but it's actually an absolute monster. Unlike most Breakdance The Dawn acts, XWAVE deal in tangible songs, close at times to the post-punky skronk of Tori Kudo's early groups, or the drowsy psych glaze of Suishou No Fune. The lengthy title track, which slowly deconstructs into a lengthy, glazed coda for humming, blue guitar buzz, could have fallen from a late 1980's Jandek album. THE WIRE

XWAVE heart breaker c40 bdtd019

second single from the forthcoming album 'memoirs' the rawest and best recorded xwave music available

xwave "heartbreaker" cdr (Breakdance The Dawn): Steadily becoming my favorite tape label, New Zealand's Breakdance the Dawn distributes records from a wild collective of no-music makers involved in shifting-member projects like xnobbqx and Sun of the Seventh Sister. This tape documents lunatics singing the lyrics of awful pop songs like Lisa Stansfield's "You Just Keep Me Hanging On" as well as The Undertones' "Teenage Kicks" to feedback-drenched drop-d riffs. Xwave does not butcher these songs, they breathe new life into them. The resulting reinvented tunes purvey a basement urgency and a symphony of beautiful slop-rock mistakes sparking off the fringe of each riff. Like the Pig Heart Transplant tape with a sense of humor. Features Arse Lunch members Adam Sussmann, James Heighway and Matt Earle. [Ed. Note- xwave, xnobbqx and the original X are all from Australia, not New Zealand. I don't think Australians like to be confused with New Zealanders](apples & heroin)

XnoBBqX 'roast spit sessions' c90 bdtd017

recorded throughout 2005 roast spit sessions contains some great pop tracks, experiments and extended jams

xnobbqx "Roast Spit Sessions" (Breakdance the Dawn, 2007): xnobbqx hail from the newest breeding ground for the Siltbreeze roster: Australian experimental music underworld. Self-described as "militant hardcore played by constipated monkeys," xnobbqx plays an over-simplified jam form, often de-evolving to the point of amateurish practice sessions. Certain band releases sound like a 13-year-old metal head practicing bass in front of a Bass for Dummies handbook. On this release, as on 2006's Sunshine of Your Love, the band paints a great cryptic picture with subtle instrumental strokes. Fluxus Appalachian-retard guitar strum transforms into low-end skronk and back again with a molasses pace. In other words: sounds like Henry Flynt and Glenn Branca's special needs child. Xeroxed cover packaged in a neat plastic baggie. Grab 'em while they're hot (apples and heroin)

full length studio album the groups sound evolved into an entirley new musical language on this album the first record with inge olmheim on bass the most striking tracks consisting of repetitivly offkilter rythms by the drums and bass with long thin ribbons of guitar feedback weaving through the upper harmonics inducing a meditative but rockin state...unbelievable

Mosweintraub Band "Still Photos on Melting Ice" CDR (Breakdance the Dawn): I don't know if Harry Pussy ever invaded Australia but, from the sounds of this CDr, their records apparently did. Primal guitar soundtracks to Fred Flintstone's broke down, foot-petaled car and illustrations of trash can recycling factories. Some of the tracks on this disc delve into garage rock territory with jagged axe scum-chugs but even those tunes eventually devolve into psycho no wave. On track six, bassist Inge Olmheim plods away, laying down a Sabbath riff while guitarist Matt Earle (xnobbqx) fires skronk nails at its stomach and tortures the amp. My 1st exposure to the (sub) genius of the label was by way of XNoBBQX, a rockin little duo who use sludge as a mascara. They had a cdr entitled 'Sunshine Of Your Love' that seemed to molecularly breakdown Harry Pussy & Mouthus into a vat of bubbling acidic porridge, each sputter slowly mushrooming then bursting into explosive SPLATS of such corrosive excellence that I had to track'em down & get the recipe. Known most days as Nick Dan & Matt Earle, they informed me that SOYL was but the tip of their iceberg & was kind enough to load me up w/all sort's of mayhem they had up their sleeves. (siltblog)

Classic rock this ain't. In fact, XNoBBQX, a duo (guitar/drums) who hail from Sydney, Australia, do everything in their power to destroy rock (good luck!) once and for all. Well, apparently, rock is still standing, but anyone who dares put this vinyl-only slab of madness near their turntable won't be for long. Out of all the Siltbreeze releases in 2007, XNoBBQX sound most like their labelmates of yore. Dead C and Harry Pussy references are bound to pop up, and they are both relevant and warranted. Definitely a must for fans of of the new wave of abrasive anti-rock (ie. Mouthus, Magik Markers etc).

An essential collection of unique folk and pop music including drone beat pop, jungle folk trance, gypsy hybrid songs, haunting vocal chants, and other beautiful, lost styles,.there maybe many minerals albums but this is the only REAL minerals album

Breakdance The Dawn is a cassette/cdr label run by Matt Earle (of XNo BbQX 'notoriety') & has been unknowingly howlin a 21st century atavistic response to the Fuck Off call of yore. Originatin in 2004, the label's raison d'etre has been to release music 'that no one else would' (hey Matt, I hear ya!-Capt'n Siltbreeze) mostly on recycled tapes. But it seems that Matt & Co. have finally hauled in their huge cache of Toohey's empties & recieved a hefty deposit for the trouble as the label is primarily cdr nowadays. And man am I a fan! Like the entrants of the various Street Level mafia, I suspect there's lot's of folks what wear many hats in different bands/projects the label has to offer. Unlike a lot of the DIY labels operatin down to Oz (a shoutout to the great works available on Spanish Magic, Trapdoor Tapes & Inverted Crux), BDTD's headwater has a 'punk' 'rock' undertow, even if it is paleolithic. And that's what's so Goddamn great about it. You listen to The Minerals, Mosweintraub Band, Your Intestines or X Wave & you can hear the channelin(albiet unintentionally) of the Sell Outs, Wilful Damage, (the aforementioned) Danny & The Dressmakers + the rest of the lot. Of course, there's always a fly in the ointment & here's it's Arse Lunch that are the contrarians. On their 'Complete' 2xcdr opus, the gurglin, textured concret they course out sounds so bewitchingly contemporaneous yet classically avant, it's hard to know if it took 6 (dog) years or 6 (human) hours to conjure together.
